Hong Kong’s Michelin star Roast Goose

Only in Hong Kong would you find roast goose that is worthy of earning a one-Michelin star. While I grew up on roast duck since my aunt does a fantastic platter of of roasted meats at her Cambridge Rd. Hong Kong Roast Pork stall at Pek Kio Market, there’s just something about that plump, supple meat of the goose that makes HK’s option even more appealing.

Which is why you MUST, promise me, to visit Yat Lok Restaurant when you’re in Hong Kong. Their roast goose won them a Michelin star, and it’s easy to see why, once you’ve tasted their roast goose. Appearance-wise, this might not look like much, but just bite into the meat and you’ll uncover a juicy, succulent bird that is incomparable to any duck out there. This was so good, that we polished it off within 10mins despite having a meal at Mak’s Noodles right before that. The char siew (caramelised pork belly) was deliciously tender as well. And those vegetables!!! You wouldn’t think that I would even mention those unassuming green stalks, would you? But they were so naturally sweet, that all they needed was a drizzle of thick dark sauce, and voilà, your meal is complete.

Another Michelin-starred establishment is Kam’s Roast Goose, which was opened by the 3rd generation owners of Yung Kee Restaurant (another famous roast goose shop). We visited Kam’s with high expectations following our good experiences with roast goose, but we were unfortunately, sorely disappointed by the quality of its signature item. It was skinny, and drier than duck, which made it rather tough to chew on. What a letdown! Thankfully, a saving grace came in the form of the Soya Chicken, which is an item that we don’t typically order, but we were so glad we did here. It was soft, yet firm, and the flavour was so well-infused into the meat that every piece was so tasty! Definitely order the Fatty Char Siew specifically (don’t make a mistake, there is the “normal” version as well, which I assume is leaner meat), and the gratification will be worth all those extra calories.

Where’s the next Michelin-star in Hong Kong that I should hunt down? Let me know in the comments below!
