All this talk about SG50 is getting me really excited for National Day & the period leading up to it! Seems like there are gonna be lots of activities geared up for this momentous celebration for our nation’s 50th ^^ Super excited! And since Singapore is so well known for our food, it features largely in the celebrations as well. This is probably one of the highlights for me since I’m such a foodie. Held in conjunction with Singapore Food Festival is the Singapore Favourite Food Village from 24 July to 2 August. It’s a culinary festival that showcases Singapore’s rich and unique multicultural food heritage by reviving one of Singapore’s iconic and long-lost makan place – Ellenborough Market – through the theme ‘A Wok Down Memory Lane at Ellenborough Market’. You can look forward to trying out Teochew cuisine and local hawkers, including one from the ex-Ellenborough Market at this event! These are some of the dishes I’m really excited about: Cold Crab, Teochew Style by Swissotel Merchant Court Keeping close to the traditional recipe, live market-fresh crabs are selected to prepare this dish, steamed at a high temperature and finished with a splash of Chinese wine. Teochew Bak Kut Teh by Xiao Chen Gu Shi I love Bak Kut Teh of all types, be it the clear peppery Teochew broth, or black herbal Hokkien version. I would say that I enjoy the Teochew varietal a tad more and I’m looking forward to try this dish at the event! Carrot Cake by Everything Foods Everything Foods’ rendition of carrot cake takes on a modern twist. One of the fusion dishes you can find at this event, their signature is simmered with fresh crabs and topped with salted egg yolk sauce. Doesn’t that sound amazing?! I can’t resist anything with salted egg in it. Other flavours that they will be introducing include Tom Yam, Sour Cream and Onion, Hot and Spicy and Barbecue. I’m officially spoilt for choice. Aside from the tantalising delights served up at these hawker stalls, there will also be live cooking demonstrations where local culinary heroes impart their prized recipes and showcase their cooking flair. Don’t miss these if you want to learn how to recreate your favourite local dishes at home. Also, for some traditional entertainment, watch out for the Teochew Opera that will be an accompaniment to your dining experience.
Hope to see you at the event! To make things a little more exciting, I’ve got a pair of Weekday Dining Ellenborough Market Cafe Vouchers (worth $96) up for grabs! To stand a chance to win this pair of tickets, all you have to do is to comment on this post with your name and favourite Teochew dish which you hope to try at the Singapore Favourite Food Village. I will then pick a random winner from all the comments. The contest ends 17 July, 2359hrs and the winner will be notified via email the next day.
